Lifeguards participate in mock mass casualty event

Tallulah Falls School lifeguards participated in a surprise Mock Mass Casualty Event as part of a monthly In-Service exercise. For October, the girls lifeguards planned the monthly In-Service training. Madison Dampier, Taylor Huling, Cecily Tucker, and coach Cyndy Campbell helped create the event.

When they arrived at the Natatorium, the lifeguards discovered that a Swim Meet between the 'Ghosts' and 'Goblins' had gone awry. With a sense of urgency, they searched the building for potential 'victims.'

Along the way, they remembered to size up the scene, don required Personal Protective Equipment, assess their 'victims,' and provide appropriate care. They encountered multiple First Aid and CPR scenarios ranging from spinal injuries, passive submerged victims, fractures, severe bleeding, impaled objects, a severed limb, and even a lost child.

"The guards rose to the challenge and took all of it very seriously," says Harrison Butler, the Assistant Natatorium Director. "They showed professionalism and dedication to providing care and keeping our swimmers safe. They enjoyed the sense of camaraderie and teamwork, and all communicated and worked very well together."

The TFS Lifeguard Staff is under the supervision of Butler, and Natatorium director Katie Ralston.

"It is always good to practice responding to emergencies in as realistic a way as possible, and it was great to have fun while doing it," adds Ralston.

The November In-Service will be planned by the male lifeguards.
