Spanish 1

This course uses comprehensible input pedagogical methods to promote student acquisition of high-frequency structures. The class uses these structures in discussions, stories, and cultural explorations. Students will be expected to recognize them when read or heard and, in time, be able to produce them in speech and writing. The goal of this course is for students to internalize the language for the long term, rather than memorize for the short term. Because success in the course hinges on comprehensible input, students should expect 90-95% of the class session to be conducted in Spanish and should know this course is highly interactive. 

Spanish 2

Spanish 2 Honors

Building on the language acquired in Spanish I, this course uses comprehensible input pedagogical methods to promote student acquisition of high-frequency structures. The class uses these structures in discussions, stories, and cultural explorations. Students will be expected to recognize them when heard or read, and to be able to produce them in speech and writing. The goal of this course is for students to internalize the language for the long-term, rather than memorize for the short-term. Because success in the course hinges on comprehensible input, students should expect nearly 95% to 100%  of the class session to be conducted in Spanish and should know that this course is highly interactive. As this is an Honors course, students are expected to independently and consistently reach for the next level of language acquisition.

Spanish 3 Honors

Building on the Spanish language already acquired in levels 1 and Honors 2 is the main goal of this class, with the ultimate goal of further developing Spanish fluency and proficiency. Students will have frequent writing assignments and speaking assignments to practice and demonstrate acquired language. To expose students to as much authentic material as possible, we will utilize short novels, movies, television, articles, podcasts, literature, music, and art throughout the year. Spanish will be the language of communication during class except for brief explanations and translations in English when necessary. This course is highly interactive and constant student engagement is critical for success.

College Spanish 113

This course is an introduction to approximately one-fourth of the phonetics, grammar, and vocabulary needed to adequately express the target language. There will be a balance between the four basic language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. 

College Spanish 123

This course is an introduction to the second of four parts of the essential phonetics, grammar, and vocabulary needed to adequately express the target language. There will be a balance between the four basic language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. 

Latin 1

This course is an introduction to approximately the first half of the phonetics, grammar, vocabulary, and texts needed to adequately read, recite, write and translate the Latin language. Some of the benefits of Latin study:  Immediate access to the learned language of Western antiquity, a better understanding of English, improved SAT and ACT scores, and a deeper comprehension of the structure and function of language as a means of cognition and communication. 

Latin Honors 2

College Latin 113

This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts of the Latin language in addition to information on Latin culture and literature. They focus on developing reading comprehension with additional practice in writing, listening and speaking.
