Season Preview: Golf
Encore! Tallulah Falls golf is more than welcome to treat us all to another performance like last year. Both the boys and girls teams not only finished as Area Runner-Up, but excelled in the GHSA State Championships. The Lady Indians finished fifth while the Indians came in 11th.
For the girls, it was their fourth top-5 finish since 2018, and best since the State Runner-Up 2021 season. TFS graduated its two-year captain Hannah Lundy (10th at state), but returns junior standouts Mallory Higgins and Raegan Duncan.
“We expect Mallory to lead our team in the top position again this year,” says coach Matt Crotta, entering his second season as head coach of the varsity golf teams. “She continues to improve her distance game to complement her very strong short game. She will likely finish most matches a few strokes over par but we hope to see her finish a few at par or better.”
Higgins was 13th individually at state, and five times was a low medalist at various matches. She and Duncan make for a solid 1-2 punch.
“Raegan also continues to improve her game and is expected to play in our #2 position this season,” adds Crotta. “She brought consistent scoring to the team last year and we expect her scores to be very competitive with our opponents.”
Coupled with the aforementioned duo are other juniors Ella Akers and Madeline Martin, who have had their standout moments as well, the Lady Indians have a huge season ahead with high expectations.
“Looking ahead, the Lady Indians have set their goal to win the region after last year's runner-up finish,” states Crotta.
The boys meanwhile also are coming off the Area Runner-Up, and were paced by recent TFS graduates, two-year captain Canon Brooks (39th at state) and Henry Bowman (63rd). Back though are junior Will Greene (46th) and sophomore Tate Turpin (54th) along with other young golfers who gained experience last season.
“Will captured our attention last year as he consistently turned in competitive scores and was always within a stroke or two from our number one, Canon,” says Crotta. “Tate also turned in competitive scores throughout the season and has improved his game during the offseason. They will certainly provide solid leadership on the course.”
The Indians are hoping to take the next step in 2024, and like the girls, have set the bar high for themselves.
“WIth new additions to the team like Rylee Smith and Ryder Cantrell, the boys will certainly be competitive in the region and will hopefully improve their region finish from 2nd-place to region champions.”
The teams tee off in late February. The boys take part in the White County Golf Tournament at Apple Mountain on February 24 and the girls (along with the boys competing) open up against Rabun County at the Kingwood Golf Course on February 27.
