Season Preview: Precision Rifle
Could this be the best season yet for Tallulah Falls School Precision Rifle? Following back-to-back 10-plus win seasons with Area Runner-Up finishes and top-10 performances at the State Championships, the expectations continue to be high for this program.
The rifle team went 11-1 in matches last season with the Area Runner-Up finish, and came in 10th place at state. While senior Jue Wang, who tied the school record in a 3x10 individual match with a 292, graduated, everyone else is back to make another run this year.
Coaches Katie Keister and Tim Stamey have continued to set the bar high, and the roster top to bottom has bought in and continues to improve. According to coaches, the standing and mental preparation are the biggest areas TFS has improved in over the past year.
Returning in 2023-24 are seniors Marc Crotta, Joseph McGahee, Ethan Simmons, and newcomer Brianna Walter. The former three have years of experience, as McGahee's 292 he shot as a sophomore at state is tied for the school record and led to him placing 7th that season. He also became only the second National Junior Olympics qualifier last year. Crotta, meanwhile, was a Positive Athlete Northeast Georgia Regional Winner last year.
Juniors Chloe Erwin, Kylee Loudermilk, and Leah Rogers have been pivotal to the team's success, and sophomores Mitchell McGahee and Zeek Pruitt will look to make big strides this season.
The excitement for this year stems from the number of seasoned veterans on the roster, as well as the fact that they've been shooting school match records in all practices leading up to this season.
The goals the team has set to accomplish includes winning Area 6 (1A-6A), and ending on the podium at the State Championships with two athletes in the final eight. Coaches also feel that it's realistic to see three National Junior Olympic qualifiers as well this year.
TFS opens the 2023-24 season on October 26 at home against North Forsyth. Tallulah Falls will host seven matches in the regular season.
