MS Indians win second straight SML title

The MS Indians won their second straight Southern Mountain League Championship on Thursday, beating both Rabun County and Habersham to claim the top spot. The girls meanwhile lost to Habersham in the semifinals round.

"I couldn't be more proud of our boys as back-to-back champs," exclaims coach Anthony Cox. "They cruised in the semifinals in about 35 minutes. Our doubles were so important to us all season, and the championship match just proved that. Fenn and Dylan just dominated both matches getting off the court first both rounds. Jackson was the second on the board in the championship dominating his opponent after a close match last time against them. Then second doubles came through clutch after pulling ahead and sealed it moments later."

TFS won 3-0 against Rabun to reach the finals against Habersham. They repeated the result to stand atop the league.

"Our boys group has been so balanced all season and earned this championship as a team," adds Cox. "They pulled for each other and really came together through the course of the season. Some people say tennis isn't a team sport. Well, at TFS, that's who we want to be, and our middle school boys showed how it's done."

The Lady Indians dropped a 3-0 decision against Habersham in the semifinals, though they fought hard.

"Proud of how our girls finished the season," adds Cox. "Habersham had only lost one line the entire season (24-1). We pushed them and battled. Even though it was 3-0, we possibly would have finished 3-2 or had a chance to win. Our girls have a lot to be proud of."

The boys close the season at 9-1 overall, and the girls end at 4-6.
