Lady Indians go 1-3; JV 0-4 at Rally Cup Tournament

The Lady Indians, both varsity and JV, took part in the Rally Cup Tournament at Lakepoint Sports Complex in Cartersville on Saturday. The varsity team went 1-3 on the day, while the JV team was 0-4.

The varsity squad got out to a tough start with a slim 2-0 loss to Johnson Ferry Christian Academy, 22-25, 23-25.

"We played solid and had moments of greatness, but just not for long enough runs," says coach Matt Heyl.

Quickly, TFS responded with a 2-1 win over Perry County (TN). After a 21-25 opening set, the girls took the next 25-19 and the finale 15-9.

"We played down in the first set at the end to allow them to come back and beat us," adds Heyl. "But then played very gritty or the rest of the match to pull out a nice victory.

Then came a 23-25, 25-18, 11-15 loss to Glenwood. in which the girls fell behind in the final set and just couldn't come back.

Margalida Amengual Sanchez and Shelby Whisnant had great serving runs. Becca Heyl and Chesney Tanksley played through injury and gave some heart and sacrifice for the team, according to Heyl. Laura Ruiz Rendon and Julia Smith had solid digs and great hustle. Lily Smith, Whisnant, and Ca'Rin Swinton all had a great day at the net scoring with much-needed kills and putbacks.

TFS dropped its final match to Northside, 16-25, 15-25.

"With injuries and the worry about making them worse, we sat Becca and Chesney, and a little bit into the match we pulled Julia out as well," adds Heyl. "Down three players the girls gave it their all especially Margalida and Laura with their great hustle and sacrifice."

Whisnant did a great job moving to outside hitter to fill in for Heyl and had several kills and a good serving run. Jace Ibemere and Caroline Smith stepped up and did a great job as well taking over vacant spots.

The Lady Indians drop to 8-8 on the season.

Meanwhile, the JV girls went 0-4 on the afternoon, falling to 1-5 overall on the season.
